“side sweep” incidents cost the UK over 400 lives per annum and is becoming a growing concern to left hand drive vehicles in the UK and right hand vehicles abroad. Side Sweeping is the name to a growing threat that faces the Industry with increasing road traffic volumes and a general public unwilling to appreciate the difficulties faced by the LGV, bus or coach driver.
The problem is two fold meaning that Left hand drive vehicles driving in the UK and right hand drive vehicles driving on the continent are unable to fully appreciate obstacles or traffic alongside their vehicle and the driver must divert attention from the road to see across the entire width of the vehicle before manoeuvring still leaving the danger of the blind spot.
New rules, now require vehicles over 3.5 tonnes to be installed with high visibility mirrors which help but have obvious disadvantages. While a mirror gives the driver a clear view of the area visible through the glass, the driver still has to look across the width of the vehicle to view the mirror thus taking his/her eye off the road ahead.
Companies have the option of flat or convex mirrors both with disadvantages while a flat mirror gives a restricted field of vision a convex mirror gives a wider but distorted view of distances and both are subject to reflection and dazzle.
Inventors at European Transport Solutions have now developed a low cost ‘fixed’ camera system giving the driver a full view of the ‘side sweep’ blind spot. Pictures are so clear from this colour camera system that drivers can be in no doubt of hazards on UK or European roads.
Michael Leigh company director explains “a camera gives a clear view of the field of vision, which can be set according to what information is required by the driver such as a wide angle. The driver has the screen mounted on the dashboard directly in his/her line of vision whilst looking at the road ahead which provides a much safer option for similar costs”.
